On 27 February 2026, the School of Media Studies, in association with the Women’s Development Cell, organised “Voices from Her Shop” at Garden City University as a University Social Responsibility (USR) initiative marking International Women’s Day. The programme was designed as a field-based academic activity that connected students with women-led small businesses in the surrounding community.
As part of the initiative, students engaged with and documented 12 women entrepreneurs managing diverse enterprises, including flower shops, vegetable and fruit stalls, tender coconut outlets, small hotels, beauty parlours, PG accommodations, fancy stores, and medical shops. Through structured interviews, visual documentation, and narrative storytelling, students captured the lived experiences of these women, highlighting their resilience, innovation, and determination.
The programme provided a meaningful platform to amplify voices that often remain underrepresented in mainstream media. By foregrounding the contributions of women in small-scale enterprises, the initiative emphasised their vital role in sustaining local economies and supporting community development.
Academically, the activity strengthened students’ field reporting, interviewing, and ethical storytelling skills while promoting experiential learning. It also fostered gender sensitivity and social awareness among participants.
“Voices from Her Shop” successfully combined celebration and community engagement, reinforcing the institution’s commitment to socially responsible education and women’s empowerment.
