Garden City University hosted an inspiring live musical performance titled Empowering Voices: Women in Music Leadership at the GCU Auditorium on 20 January 2026. The event was organised by the Folk and Performing Arts Sphere of the School of Media Studies, in collaboration with the GCU Bass Club and the Gender Sensitization Club, underscoring the university’s commitment to cultural exchange, artistic excellence, and gender-inclusive leadership.
The performance featured the internationally acclaimed Swedish duo Biggi Vinkeloe on flute and Annika Törnqvist on electric bass. Together, the duo delivered a powerful and nuanced musical experience that blended Scandinavian folk traditions with jazz and contemporary improvisational elements. Their performance stood out for its expressive depth, technical sophistication, and seamless musical dialogue.
Biggi Vinkeloe’s flute work was marked by lyrical phrasing and emotional intensity, while Annika Törnqvist’s bass lines provided both rhythmic strength and melodic innovation. The duo’s collaborative approach highlighted women’s leadership in instrumental performance, composition, and live musical direction, offering students a compelling example of artistic partnership and creative autonomy.
The concert provided an enriching cultural exposure for students across disciplines, particularly those studying media, music, and performing arts. Beyond entertainment, the performance served as a platform for reflecting on women’s representation in global music cultures and the role of live performance in shaping social narratives. The event strongly resonated with Garden City University’s vision of experiential learning and global cultural engagement through the arts.
