The latest staff colloquium at Garden City University featured an insightful session by Dr. Vasumati R, Head of the Department of Psychology, on the theme “Now or Never.” Centered on the universal challenge of procrastination, the session explored why people delay important tasks and how to overcome the habit.
Dr. Vasumati explained that procrastination is not about laziness but often linked to emotions such as fear of failure, decision paralysis, and mood regulation. Drawing on psychology and brain science, she highlighted the roles of the amygdala in avoidance and the prefrontal cortex in planning. Participants were introduced to different “procrastinator types”—fearful, perfectionist, pressure-lover, and ‘my way’—and their effects, including stress, missed opportunities, and regret.
Practical strategies like the “two-minute rule,” breaking tasks into smaller steps, removing distractions, and rewarding progress were shared. The session concluded with a call for self-discipline, motivation, and aligning vision with action.
