The recent staff colloquium on Healthy Ageing led by Dr. N. Senthil Kumar began on a light-hearted note, with the speaker inviting participants to sit according to their age groups. This icebreaker set the tone for an engaging discussion on what is often considered a sensitive subject.
Dr. Senthil highlighted the importance of maintaining physical and mental well-being as we grow older. Drawing from a research study he conducted, he shared key factors influencing healthy ageing. While the expected contributors—regular physical activity, a protein-rich diet, and moderation in alcohol consumption—were reaffirmed, the study also underscored two lesser-discussed yet vital aspects: social connectivity and financial security. These findings encouraged the academic community to reflect on how mental and social well-being are often overlooked in Indian society.
Practical suggestions such as learning new skills, staying updated with technology, and nurturing active social networks were offered as pathways to graceful ageing. The session concluded with an energising Tai Chi exercise, led by Dr. Natasha Verma (PT) and Prof. Shilpashree from the School of Health Sciences.
